MemoryMixer 2 - Installing MemoryMixer 2
This is a known issue that affects a limited number of Windows computers. We are currently looking into the problem. If you are experiencing this error, we suggest that you copy the contents of the entire installation CD to a location on your computer’s hard drive and run the installer (menu.exe) from there instead. Once MemoryMixer is installed, you may safely delete the copied files from your computer.
Back to topThe license key used to register your copy of MemoryMixer 2 is not located on the program disc sleeve as indicated by the installer. Instead you can find the license key affixed to the “Getting Started” Guide that came with your MemoryMixer 2 software.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 depends on both Apple QuickTime and Adobe Reader for many of its functions. Because of this, the MemoryMixer installation will stop and return you to the original menu if it detects that one or both of these programs need to be installed. This does not mean that MemoryMixer has been installed, but that QuickTime and/or Adobe Reader must be installed prior to continuing the installation.
If you have trouble downloading the Apple QuickTime or Adobe Reader installs from the Internet, working versions of both programs can be installed directly from the MemoryMixer 2 Program Disc. Simply access them from the main menu that should appear automatically when the install CD is inserted into your computer drive.
Once those two pieces of software are installed, you should be able to install MemoryMixer by selecting the “Install MemoryMixer” option at the top of the menu screen. If you continue to receive a message about installing QuickTime/Adobe Reader and are returned again to the menu, please restart your computer. Sometimes programs like Adobe Reader and Apple QuickTime require that the computer be restarted before their installations are correctly recognized by the operating system.
Back to topThe other three discs (or four discs, if purchased from QVC) that are provided with MemoryMixer 2 contain additional content that you may like to use with your MemoryMixer software. This content includes extra QuickMixes, backgrounds, embellishments, etc. The installation of these items is optional, so you do not need to install them in order to continue using MemoryMixer 2. To install the discs, just place each disc into your CD/DVD drive one at a time. Each disc has its own installer, which should start automatically when inserted, and all you need to do is follow the on-screen prompts to install the additional content to your computer.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 - MemoryMixer 2 & Windows Vista
Yes. MemoryMixer 2 is compatible with Windows Vista, as long as the program is run in Administrator mode.
Back to topWindows Vista has introduced a number of new security features to its operating system. Even though a user account may be recognized as an Administrator, full access to software programs such as MemoryMixer 2 is still restricted. To avoid any problems, MemoryMixer 2 should be run using a higher privilege level called Administrator mode.
Back to topTo set up MemoryMixer 2 to run automatically in Administrator mode, you must first locate the shortcut you use to start the program (it is usually on the desktop or in the Start Menu). Right-click on the shortcut and select “Properties” from the drop-down menu that appears. In the MemoryMixer Properties window that opens, click on the “Compatibility” tab near the top of the window. Under the section labeled “Privilege Level,” left-click on the box next to “Run this program as administrator.” A checkmark should be added to the box. Click “Apply.” Then click “OK.” From now on you can just double-click on the shortcut as you normally would to run MemoryMixer 2 in Administrator mode.
Back to topDon’t worry. This prompt is the result of a new Windows Vista security feature called User Account Control that seeks to ensure that harmful software is not run on your computer without your knowledge. If you see this screen when attempting to run MemoryMixer 2, simply click on the “Allow” option to permit the MemoryMixer software to run as usual.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 - MemoryMixer Software Support/Help
This problem occurs on Windows computers that have upgraded their QuickTime version to 7.3 or later. These later QuickTime versions have introduced a new software bug that causes the audio to stutter when it is converted to the DVD format. We have contacted Apple about the issue, but have yet to hear any resolution from them.
As we await an Apple fix, we recommend that QuickTime version 7.2 be reinstalled on the computer if you plan on creating DVD-Videos or “DVD Quality” movies. To properly reinstall QuickTime 7.2, please follow these instructions:
Check the System Tray (bar at the bottom of the right of your screen) for the blue “Q” icon. If it is present, right-click on it and select “Exit.”
Open “Add/Remove Programs” (“Uninstall a Program” in Vista) in the Windows Control Panel and uninstall QuickTime.
Go to HYPERLINK “http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime72forwindows.html” to download the QuickTime 7.2 installer (you should see a download link at the right hand side of the screen next to “File Size”).
Save the installer to your computer.
After the file has downloaded, install it to your computer by double-clicking on it. Follow any prompts that appear onscreen during the installation. You may need to restart your computer after the installation finishes.
Run MemoryMixer again after restarting. Create a “DVD Quality” movie and make sure that the timing and audio are both correct. If they are then you may choose to burn a DVD-Video, which should confirm the same results.
Please know that we intend these instructions as a temporary workaround and we will continue to work with Apple on providing a more long-term solution to this problem.
If you would prefer to have the latest version of QuickTime on your computer, the workaround is to change the format of your audio files.
Use the following instructions to convert each file before adding it to your album:
Using iTunes to Change the Sample Rate of your Audio Files in Windows
Note: Music purchased from the iTunes Store has copyright protection and cannot be edited. Please make substitutions.
Open iTunes.
Click the Edit Menu and choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Importing sub-tab.
Prior to changing any settings it is recommended that you write down the current settings, so that you may restore them after you are done converting your audio.
Change the Import Using drop-down to WAV Encoder.
Change the Setting drop-down from Automatic to Custom. A new window will appear.
Set the Sample Rate to 48.000 kHz. (The default settings for the Sample Size and Channels should be fine.)
Click the OK button in the WAV Encoder window, and then click the OK button in the Preferences window.
Make sure the Music category on the left side of iTunes under Library is selected.
If your music file is not already in the iTunes library, drag it into middle part of the iTunes window.
Click on the audio file you want to convert in iTunes.
Click the Advanced menu and choose Convert Selection to WAV.
After the file has finished converting, a new copy of it will appear in iTunes directly below the original song. Drag the new copy of the audio file back to your Desktop.
The audio file is now ready to be used in the software.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 - Miscellaneous
All QuickMixes and digital content purchased from the MemoryMixer online store is compatible with any version of MemoryMixer, unless otherwise noted in its product description.
Back to topThe “Large” size is usually the ideal export option, especially when creating a photobook or having your album pages printed. Album pages at this setting will be exported to JPG files with a high resolution of 3600×3600 pixels at 300 dpi. At this size, square albums can be printed as large as 12”x12” and landscape/portrait albums as large as 8.5”x11”. However, exporting your pages at the “Large” size will take more time to create. So if speed is a more important factor to you than picture quality, you may be better off choosing one of the other size options. Please note that the “Web/Email” option is strongly discouraged if you intend to print your album pages in any way.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 - Upgrading MemoryMixer
There is no need to worry. Any albums created in a previous version of MemoryMixer can be converted for use in MemoryMixer 2, ensuring that none of your hard work will be lost when you upgrade. Please note that converted albums will no longer be usable in previous versions of MemoryMixer.
Back to topDue to the many new features introduced in MemoryMixer 2, albums created or converted for use in MemoryMixer 2 will not be usable in previous versions of the MemoryMixer software.
Back to topSimply open the MemoryMixer album in MemoryMixer 2. The program will automatically ask you if you would like to convert the album. Click “Yes” at this prompt. Please note that converted albums will no longer be usable in previous versions of MemoryMixer.
Back to topAny digital content that came with your original version of MemoryMixer will still be there when you upgrade to MemoryMixer 2. This means that loyal customers will be rewarded with a large library of terrific content that version 2 owners will not have.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 - Using MemoryMixer 2
The first time a folder containing photos is accessed, MemoryMixer 2 automatically creates thumbnail images of each photo for quick previewing. The time it takes for this process to finish depends on the number of photos in the folder and the speed of your computer. Although the program may appear frozen, it is not. Unless the contents of a folder change significantly, there should be little to no delay the next time the folder is accessed.
Back to topMemoryMixer 2 comes with five fonts that are used in conjunction with the newly included QuickMixes. Normally these fonts should be installed when the program is installed, but the Windows operating system sometimes prevents the fonts from being installed correctly. This is especially true for computers running Windows Vista. To install the fonts manually, place your MemoryMixer 2 Program Disc into your CD drive. Close the MemoryMixer installation menu that appears and browse to the files on the disc instead. You should see a folder called “fscommand.” Inside that folder is another folder labeled “Fonts.” Copy the files from this folder to the “C:\Windows\Fonts” directory on your computer’s hard drive. The fonts should automatically install themselves when they are copied. If they do not appear in MemoryMixer, restarting your computer may be necessary to complete the installation process.
Back to topPlease check your Start Menu for a program group called “MemoryMixer2.” Inside this group there should be a “MemoryMixer” shortcut that can be used to run the software. There should also be other “MemoryMixer” shortcuts available on the Windows Desktop and the Quick Launch bar if you opted to create them during software installation. If you cannot find shortcuts in any of these locations, MemoryMixer 2 may not be correctly installed on your computer. Please place the Program Disc into your CD/DVD drive and reinstall the MemoryMixer software. For more information about the installation process, please refer to the MemoryMixer 2 User Guide (contained on the Program Disc) or the “Installing MemoryMixer 2” section of this FAQ.
Back to topThis issue has recently occurred due to an unforeseen change by Apple in their latest QuickTime version (7.2). The solution is often as simple as copying a file from one location on your computer to another, but may sometimes require Apple QuickTime to be reinstalled. As the fix varies between a Mac computer and a PC, please make sure to follow the instructions appropriate to your computer type.
Back to topBecause a thorough explanation of the problem would be time-consuming and perhaps confusing to some, suffice it to say that all of these problems are caused by a known incompatibility between the Windows Vista operating system (OS), the hardware drivers provided for the OS by Intel or Nvidia, and Apple’s QuickTime software.
It is this incompatibility that causes Apple QuickTime to load files (image/audio/video) extremely slow, or stutter during playback. You may test this for yourself by opening your files in Apple’s QuickTime Player. The results will be the same as the ones you saw in MemoryMixer. This is because MemoryMixer utilizes QuickTime to process its photos, music, and videos, and thus experiences the same adverse effects.
While we strive to avoid issues such as these in our software, this particular problem can only be resolved by the chipset manufacturers releasing updated drivers for the hardware in your computer. Intel has already done this, although many computer manufacturers have yet to make these latest driver updates available from their website. Nvidia, on the other hand, has yet to acknowledge the problem and it is currently unknown when we can expect a fix from their company.
In either case, we are pleased to be able to provide solutions for both chipsets that should resolve the problems that you may be experiencing. The first thing that you will need to do is determine the chipset that is used on your computer. The most common chipset manufacturers are Intel and Nvidia, and their name is usually stickered on the front of your computer. If no stickers are present, or you are unsure about which chipset your computer contains, please contact your computer manufacturer (HP, Dell, etc.) to assist you in this matter. Once you know the chipset contained inside your computer, please follow the instructions appropriate to your chipset manufacturer below:
Intel Chipset:
Even though Intel has recently released an update to their hardware drivers that corrects the Apple QuickTime problems on Windows Vista, many computer manufacturers have yet to place these latest drivers on their website, so they will need to be downloaded and installed from Intel’s website instead.
- Open your Internet browser and go to the following website: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
- At the Intel Download Center, click on the “Intel Chipset Identification Utility [CHIPUTIL.EXE]” from the list of Top Downloads. If you cannot locate it there, then please use this link to navigate directly to the download page: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=11691&lang=eng
- At the Intel Chipset Identification Utility download page, click on the “Download” link to the right of the file name. You will need to “Accept” the license agreement and then click once more on the download link to save the file to your computer.
- After the file is completely downloaded, double-click on it to run the Chipset Identification Utility. If it doesn’t load or an error is reported, right-click on the file instead and select “Run as Administrator” from the menu that appears.
- Make a note of the “Detected Chipset” shown in the program, as you will soon need it again. Close the program once you know this chipset number.
- Now return to your Internet browser and the Intel Download Center: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
- Using the menu selection at the left side of the webpage, click on “Chipsets > Chipset Software > Intel Matrix Storage Manager.”
- At the next screen you will be asked to select your operating system. Choose “Windows Vista” and then click the “Go!” button beneath it.
- Find the latest version of the “RAID/AHCI Software – Intel Matrix Storage Manager” (it needs to be 7.5.0.1017 or later) and click on its name.
- The Intel Matrix Storage Manager download page will open. Scroll to the bottom of this page and make sure that the chipset number you noted in step 4 is listed there. If it is not listed, please do not continue with these steps, as it may cause serious problems with your computer’s setup if you do.
- If your chipset number is listed, then click on the “Download” link to the right of the file name (choose the English file for a quicker download). You may need to “Accept” the license agreement again. Then click once more on the download link to save the file to your computer.
- After the file is completely downloaded, double-click on it to update your Intel chipset drivers. Follow any onscreen prompts, and after the update has finished installing, make sure that you restart your computer.
- After the reboot, please try running MemoryMixer 2 again.
NVIDIA Chipset:
Because Nvidia has yet to update their hardware drivers to work correctly with Apple QuickTime on Windows Vista, we will need to remove their hardware drivers and install the generic ones provided by Microsoft instead.
- Open your Windows Start menu.
- Right-click on the “Computer” link and select “Manage” from the small context menu that appears.
- A Computer Management window will open. Click on “Device Manager” in the left pane of this window.
- A list of devices that are installed on your computer will then appear at the window’s right-hand side. Click on the small plus sign next to “IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers” to view the installed devices for this section.
- You may notice some “NVIDIA” installed devices there. The drivers for these devices will need to be replaced by generic ones. To do this, right-click on the “NVIDIA” device and select “Update Driver Software.”
- A new window will appear asking how you would like to search for the driver software. Click on the “Browse My Computer for Driver Software” option.
- On the next screen, click on the “Let Me Pick From a List of Device Drivers on My Computer” option.
- A list of compatible hardware drivers will then be loaded automatically. Choose the one marked “Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller” and click “Next.” If you do not see this exact driver, please choose a driver marked “Standard” and not any driver indicating “NVIDIA.”
- The new driver will install at this point. Please follow any prompts that appear and reboot when it asks you to reboot.
- After every reboot, please return to the Device Manager (following steps 1-5) and repeat steps 6-9 for any “NVIDIA” devices that remain installed in the “IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers” section of the Device Manager. When there are none left, please try running MemoryMixer 2 again.
Most likely, this is a result of the computer being used to view the CD-ROM having been updated to QuickTime 7.2. This is a Windows or Vista only issue. (Macs will not encounter this issue.) The problem can be easily corrected by running the small (1 MB) Memories Viewer update file (i.e. mvupdate_qt_7_2_windows.exe). The update simply allows permission for the Digital Album to use the QuickTime components to be accessed in running the movies, audio, and photos.

Click on the Edit menu at the top of the program and choose Preferences. On the Font tab, choose the settings you would like to use for the default font.
Back to topMemoryMixer 1 - Photo Layouts
Some QuickMixes are designed with specific design elements and positioning that requires a specific photo or type of photo to be placed in that position. However, you may still change the position of photos (and other page embellishments or objects) manually by clicking on the object and dragging the mouse while holding the mouse button down.
Back to topMemoryMixer 1 - Printing
Printing an album is a memory-intensive process. If you have ever printed a very large image, you will know that it can take the computer a few moments to process the image before it prints. In the case of a MemoryMixer album, each page can contain dozens of high-resolution graphics files, which must each be processed to create a single print file. This process can be lengthy.
To improve printing time, add more memory to your computer or upgrade your computer system. The development of future versions of MemoryMixer software will always include researching the most efficient ways to print albums.
Back to topIn most cases, nothing is wrong. MemoryMixer albums can take a long time to print. See the “Why does it take so long to print an album?” question.

If you eject MemoryMixer Disc 1 without exiting the Flash MemoryMixer installation menu, you will receive this message. Insert MemoryMixer disc 1 and close all Flash menus before ejecting the disc.
